Biographer death 'was suspicious'

A post-mortem examination has revealed Allan Chappelow, 86, from Hampstead, north west London died from head injuries.

Police found his body at his home on Wednesday after reports of "concern for his welfare".

Scotland Yard detectives believe Mr Chappelow died some days before being discovered.

According to reports, he may have been the victim of identity theft and was killed by the thieves who gained access to his personal details.

It was said bank officials tipped off police after becoming concerned that Mr Chappelow had lost money through a series of bogus transactions.

He is believed to have reported the theft of some of his post to police early last month after returning from a trip to America.

And in the days leading up to the discovery of his body, £10,000 is reported to have been transferred out of one of Mr Chappelow's bank accounts by a man claiming to be him.

Mr Chappelow's work included books on the playwright George Bernard Shaw entitled Shaw the Chucker-Out: a Biographical Exposition and Critique, and Shaw the Villager and Human Being.

He also wrote Russian Holiday, which was published in 1955.
